About the artist:
Michael's passion for woodworking began as a child when he was inspired by watching his father make furniture for their home. While a Boy Scout, Michael read a book by Eric Sloan entitled "A Reverence for Wood" which gave him a deep appreciation for trees and wood. An early teacher introduced him to the sliding dovetail which over the years has become a signature feature of Michael's wide diversity of box styles. In 1978, Michael established his business, Heartwood Creations in Rockford, Illinois. Heartwood uses a variety of domestic and non-endangered, exotic woods in their products which range from tiny pill boxes, puzzle boxes, and game boards to large multiple-drawer jewelry boxes.
