About the artist
Marc Smith is a highly accomplished woodcarver living near Joshua Tree National Park, about 60 miles inland from California’s southern coast. His masterful sea life carvings include lifelike depictions of whales, sea turtles, seahorses and manta rays. Shorebird subjects include curlews and herons. Marc’s other favorites include hummingbirds and quail families. His woods of choice are cocobolo and bocote, and natural burls, primarily buckeye, spalted maple and manzanita. As all his carvings are done completely freehand using nothing more than saws, chisels and sanding discs, each of Marc’s sculptures is truly one-of-a-kind.
