About the artist
Schlabaugh & Sons is a family owned and operated woodworking shop in Kalona, Iowa. Since 1950, they have specialized in producing functional items made of the finest quality native and imported hardwoods. Carrying on the tradition, Mark and John Schlabaugh take particular pride in their continued emphasis on distinctive clocks of highest quality. In an age of mass-produced items, Schlabaugh products stand out by nature of their materials, craftsmanship and the simplicity and unique beauty of both their traidtional and contemporary designs.
The Motawi tiles used in many of their mantel clocks is made by another sibling duo, Karim and Nawal Motawi, and their staff of talented artisans. In their Ann Arbor studio they use locally produced clay and glazes mixed on site to their own recipes. Their designs have evolved from Nawal’s continuous exploration of historical decorative art combined with some brotherly suggestions by Karim. |
