About the artist

Chris knew that she was going to be an artist from her in her early childhood. She remembers drawing horses and copying fashion illustrations from Vogue Magazine for hours and hours on her living room floor. She remembers riding in the back seat of her father’s car making compositions of the landscape as it flew by. She saw the world in pictures. Now, one of the foremost fabric artists in the country today, Chris’ hallmark “fabric pictures” composed from carefully-cut scraps of cloth hung in hand-painted frames are highly collectible. Applying a child’s eye to adult realities her work reminds viewers not to take themselves too seriously ... “that’s what my art is about: the joy and wonder and humor that’s all around us every day”.

Chris works in textile applique, which consists of cutting shapes of fabric and stitching them to a fabric background. She uses a variety of fabrics (wools, cottons, flannels, linens, etc.) and chooses them mostly for color or pattern. She uses the sewing machine like a drawing tool – scribbling and filling in areas of color with tiny stitches. She also hand stitches detailing on most pieces. All are framed behind glass in hand-painted, titled frames.
