About the artist
Carole Fox, of Silver Fox Pottery, lives and works
in rural northeast Maryland. Her horsehair raku pots are made from terra
sigillata: clay slip made from the finest particles. Prior to the last
firing, Carole applies individual horsehair strands to the pot. After
the piece is fired, the hair burns off, leaving lines of carbon residue.
Living in horse country inspired Carole to develop her horsehair raku
pottery. She was looking for some way to give her vases surface dimension.
Carole found horsehair added a dramatic element and complex design to
her vases. Originally, she collected hairs from a neighboring pasture.
Today, many of her customers own horses themselves, and supply Carole
with strands in order to create a very personal work of art.
