About UsFollowing a successful 20-year career as a research/consulting scientist at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, John Sherman opened Creations Fine Woodworking Gallery in 1992.Sherman, with degrees from Hamilton College (BA), University of Vermont (MS) and the University of Delaware (PhD), decided it was time to let the right side of his brain have sway over his second life. Inspiration for the gallery came from a family background in small business, a woodworking hobby and a desire to rail against the homogenization of our society where chain stores and giant, vacuous superstores have spread across the nation like a plague. Sherman sees the role of the gallery as bringing a greater appreciation of fine contemporary woodworking to a broader sector of the public. Opening in 1992 with 6 furniture makers, the gallery now features over 200 US, Australian and Canadian woodworkers whose bench-made products range from clocks, jewelry boxes, toys and games to one-of-a-kind sculptures and commissioned furniture.
Although the gallery has kept its primary focus on fine woodcraft other media have been slowly introduced over the years including metal, paper and fine craft jewelry. Creations has recently been named Top 100 Retailer of American Craft by the publishers of American Style Magazine for the years 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
